Writer's Block: Game dream believer

Feb. 7th, 2010 | 07:46 pm

If you could wake up and spend 24 hours in an online game with any weapons/powers, would you do it? If so, what type of game would you choose, and why?

No because I learned an important lesson from that one South Park episode, Make Love Not Warcraft.

Writer's Block: Educated guess

Feb. 6th, 2010 | 11:23 am

How has your education prepared you for your current or intended career? Do you wish you had taken a different path academically? Would you consider transferring or going back to school?

My mom asked my brother and me this same question at Christmas, only her wording was something like if you could go back in time would you choose a different major or a different career. I told her that if I could go back in time I would invest in stocks that I knew from the future would make a killing, maybe memorize winning lottery numbers or winning horses and do some gambling so I would never have to worry about a moneymaking career and only take classes that actually interested me. My brother was amused and thought it was an awesome idea. My mother was not amused because apparently I never answer questions with real answers.

So the real answer here is that my education prepared me quite well for my current career. I majored in child development and early childhood education and it prepared me for my job as a director of a children's program. It did not prepare me to deal with mentally ill, sociopathic, or drunk parents. It did not prepare me to be a collection agent. That was on the job training.
As far as wishing that I'd chosen a different academic path, no. But that's only assuming that the question is asking if I wish I'd done so in order to have a different career. I'm still sticking by my time traveling, insider trading wish.

How do you feel about human cloning? Do you think the long-term societal impact will be positive or negative? Why?

While I do, from time to time, think about how awesome it would be to have a clone of myself running around, I think we all have to remember that there can be serious consequences. I mean, remember what happened in a little Colorado town when Stan's evil clone terrorized people and destroyed property? That kind of thing is never good.

Writer's Block: Obama drama

Jan. 28th, 2010 | 10:44 am

How do you think President Obama is doing so far? If you're an American citizen, would you vote the same way (whether for or against)? If you're not, what's your take on Obama's performance? Did his State of the Union address sway your opinion in any way?

I didn't vote for Obama and I didn't vote for McCain either. The two party system is flawed and we were sure to be screwed either way, but we only had two choices (at least ones that had a fair shot).

I am disillusioned. And no, the State of the Union address didn't sway my opinion either way because I opted to watch Sanford and Son reruns instead.

I would like to encourage Ross Perot to run for president again and have Jimmy Walker be his running mate. That's one campaign I could get behind in 2012. It would be Dyno-mite!

Slacktivism

Jan. 9th, 2010 | 11:44 am

This would be yet another way in which Face Book annoys me. I really did not need to know what color bra my mother was wearing.

My new word for the day is "slacktivism" which is defined as virtual activism with no real results. Examples of slacktivism include forwarding e-mails to support a cause or posting the color of your bra on Facebook to support breast cancer awareness.

Baby Hammy

Dec. 30th, 2009 | 11:59 pm

My brother showed me a cute puppy picture that almost looks like it could have been Hamlet as a baby so I had to do a side by side comparison.

Writer's Block: It's the thought that counts

How much energy do you expend trying to find the perfect gift for someone you love? Do you enjoy the process or does it make you anxious?

View 505 Answers

I don't have to put a whole lot of energy into finding the perfect gift for my love. I enjoy the process very much. Here's how we did it this year: Took him with me to the store, let him check out a few things, and purchased the one he seemed to like the best. I also picked out a little something for him from the bakery while he was distracted.

He got his present early.

In The News

Dec. 19th, 2009 | 06:27 am

Let's face it, news reports can be so depressing (or just plain stupid), but this is the kind of news I like to read. Well, I mean, not the part about the innocent people who got murdered but what happened in the end.

Writer's Block: Holiday blues

Dec. 14th, 2009 | 06:53 pm

What is the most emotionally challenging aspect of the holidays for you? Do you enjoy this season more or less than you did as a child?

View 822 Answers

Emotionally, mentally, and physically draining are the lines and crowds and having to put on a huge holiday family event at work.

I can't say whether or not I enjoy the season more or less than when I was a child because it's so very different now that there's no way to compare. It was great as a child because I didn't have to do all the work that goes with the holidays (or the season itself like shoveling snow out of the drive way to get to work) but I got all the goodies like cookies and presents. But then as an adult I can opt out of any gatherings I don't want to go to and I can buy my own presents and I don't have to wait to open them either.

I am very much looking forward to my favorite holiday though. I've been preparing all year!

Now let's all sing the song:

Oh Whacking Day!
Oh Whacking Day!
Our hallowed snake skull-cracking day!
We’ll break their backs!
Gouge out their eyes!
Their evil hearts we’ll pulverize!
Oh Whacking Day!
Oh Whacking Day!
May God bestow his grace on thee…

Writer's Block: Go it alone

Dec. 9th, 2009 | 06:25 pm

Do you think society puts too much pressure on people to be in relationships and/or have children? Do you think this ostracizes people who would be perfectly content to remain single and/or child-free? Is this pressure worse around the holidays?

Brrrrr!

Dec. 8th, 2009 | 08:55 pm

I swapped out my old comforter for this one, a bedroom look I like to call "Sushi Rock."

And yes it was under the tween boy section but I happen to love it.

It was so cold this morning that I spent 10 minutes scraping ice off my windshield with my library card. Hamlet, who is usually the first one to wake up and nudges me out of bed to take him outside, did not want to get out of the warm bed this morning. He was not a happy doggie.

But he was so adorable that I had to take this picture.

It's supposed to be just as cold tomorrow morning. Sorry Ham!

Bah Humbug (sort of, I'm still slightly festive)

Dec. 6th, 2009 | 09:19 pm

I've been slowly picking up Christmas presents and wrapping them a few at a time. Hamlet, of course, feels the need to "help" so the process takes much more time than it should and I end up stopping and putting everything away so I can play with him. Usually I'm excited about the shopping and wrapping and arranging presents under the pretty fiber optic tree. Not this year. It's more like a chore. I'm going to do my best at faking it. Here's my faking it picture:

Oh yeah and yesterday when I was shopping and looking very obviously lost and confused, a wonderful young lady asked me if she could help me find anything, paused, looked me over and asked if my name was Lisa. She remembered me from her 2nd grade class and told me what a fun teacher I was. It was a heartwarming moment that made braving seasonal shopping a bit more bearable.

Shopping & Stuff

Dec. 3rd, 2009 | 09:46 pm

I wouldn't have even gone shopping today except that I was forced to endure the task to buy supplies for work. I ended up picking up all kinds of goodies for myself (perfume, earrings, candles) and a jacket for Hamlet. He's not amused, but I think he looks very handsome in it.

It's getting cold so he's going to get used to wearing it whether he likes it or not!

What are your feelings towards smoking? What rights do you think smokers and non-smokers should have?

I think it's funny that not that long ago cigarettes were sold medicinally and were doctor recommended. Who can forget that 1946 Camel ad?

Happy Holidays

Nov. 30th, 2009 | 10:19 am

I am so not feeling the whole Holiday thing this year. Usually by now my decorations would be up, cards would be signed and envelopes addressed, and half my shopping would be done. I can't seem to bring myself to do any of that because I'm just not in the mood. And the whole Black Friday/Cyber Monday thing is not encouraging me even a little. If anything it's pissing me off. I am, however, very much enjoying the tons of lights and decorations that my neighbors put on their balcony. That's something I can enjoy from my living room and doesn't involve crowds, lines, noise, and being sneezed on by strangers.

Hamlet @ the Vet

Nov. 29th, 2009 | 06:49 pm

Hamlet had his first vet visit and even though he was scared, he was a really good boy. I was worried about the bump on his tummy that I thought was an outie belly button but my mom said was probably a hernia. I was also kind of worried about the fact that he has permanent doggie "lipstick" a condition that can require surgery. The vet said he does in fact have a hernia, but not one that requires surgery right now. As for his paraphimosis, it looks like surgery isn't necessary for that either. It's not an injury and it's not that his muscles are incapable of retracting his doghood into its sheath, it seems he was just blessed or cursed with an abnormally large penis. The vet used KY jelly to work it back in but it wouldn't go in all the way. I'm supposed to get some KY and do that twice a day so it doesn't dry out and get all calloused. I'm not sure how I feel about that, although I can see the humor in it. My immaturity came out when I sent my boyfriend to the store for KY and rubber gloves. I told him (dared him actually) that when he placed his purchases on the counter to make sure to tell the cashier that it's not what it looks like--this is for my dog!

T-Day

Nov. 28th, 2009 | 07:00 pm

Thanksgiving was delicious, even being a vegetarian. I've had enough holidays eating only the salad that I brought so this time I sweet talked the hosts and other guests into making yummy vegetarian dishes and so this year while everyone else is eating turkey leftovers, I'm enjoying my own leftovers.

Ham enjoyed meeting his cousins but he got in the way of a happy waggy tail.

Ham also got some bonding time in with his aunt Holly

And he got hugs from mom too

First Day of School

Nov. 22nd, 2009 | 05:23 pm

Hammy had his first training session on Saturday and met a new friend. It was just orientation for the most part and we'll work on actual training next week.

Meh.

Nov. 18th, 2009 | 11:06 pm

Despite my hyper-vigilant hand washing, peach scented hand sanitizer squirted on children's hands, and wiping down every surface with lysol wipes a dozen times throughout the day, I have once again become infected with something or other (probably just a cold but it still sucks).

My boyfriend is on yet another business trip and Hammy is fast asleep on my lap. I need to take him to the vet because I think he has Paraphimosis (inability of the penis to retract into the preputial cavity) and needs surgery to correct it and prevent complications/infections. He doesn't seem to be in any pain or even bothered by it, though, so we'll see what the vet says.

I hate being sick and still having to go to work. I hope Hammy is okay and treatment is simple and won't wipe out my bank account.
